For the Penguin Book Cover Design competition, I have chosen to illustrate Talking Turkeys (1995) by Benjamin Zephanaih and Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee (1999) by Meera Syal.

My initial research into the book made me straight away think it needs to be fun, not serious, as it is aimed at kids 8 - 12. I felt that colours that are more warmer toned would be best to emphasise the poetry in the book, sort of representing Zephanaih’s personality, and the design definitely needs to include turkeys, something I have never drawn!
Thumbnails
With the first thumbnail I will need to change the back layout of book as the barcode/text conflicts with the imagery, if I choose it.
I think I prefer this last design idea best, has more of a purposeful shape that works with text and barcode/logos. I probably need to emphasise more of the space as well as make them look more like turkeys as well, but that will come when I finalise what design I am going with.

The book was adapted into a tv series in 2005, it would have been good to watch to get an idea of the story through this way, but isn’t available to watch anywhere that I am aware of.

With research for this book I came across this article which I felt helps to summarise the story and what Syal was wanting to address in the book. The idea of it being a juxtaposition of positive and negative, made me think about using bright colours or patterns that represent the Punjabi culture of the characters, but have some of the characters emotions be negative which relates to the title as well.
